Your Career Starts Here: Expert Advice for Life After College

Graduating college is an incredible milestone and if you’re reading this, congratulations! You’ve worked hard, earned your degree, and now you’re stepping into one of the most exciting (and yes, sometimes overwhelming) chapters of your life: entering the workforce.

As someone who’s spent over 40 years in the recruiting industry, I’ve had the privilege of helping thousands of individuals take their first steps into the professional world. Today, I’d like to share a few lessons I wish every new graduate had when they’re making that exciting leap from student life to a fulfilling career.

Did you know? On average, adults continue learning even after school – 100,000 hours over their lifetime (that’s about 45 years) and work for 80,000 hours.

That’s a lot of time! It’s why how you start your career matters. Not because you need to get it “perfect” on day one, but because your mindset, attitude, and early habits will shape your journey in powerful ways.

So today, I want to encourage you with a piece of advice:

Start with confidence.

You may not have everything figured out—and that’s perfectly okay. None of us did when we started out. What matters most isn’t having all the answers, but trusting that you can find them along the way. Confidence doesn’t mean being the loudest voice in the room or pretending you know more than you do. It means believing in your ability to grow, adapt, and contribute.

Over the years, I’ve seen too many talented individuals hold themselves back because they didn’t feel “ready.” Let me tell you a secret: no one ever really feels 100% ready. Readiness comes after the leap, not before it. So take that leap—with confidence.

1. Confidence Leads to Action

When you believe in yourself, you do the things that others hesitate to do. You apply for the job even if you’re not sure you check every box. You speak up in the meeting. You introduce yourself to someone who inspires you. Those small acts of courage may seem minor at the time—but they are the stepping stones of a meaningful career.

2. Action Leads to Accomplishment

Every major career accomplishment starts with a single decision to take action. It’s not about giant leaps or dramatic breakthroughs—it’s about consistent, intentional actions that eventually lead to real impact.

As you build experience, aim to become a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in your field. That means diving deep into your industry, continuously learning, and becoming the person others turn to for insight. SMEs are not only trusted for their expertise—they’re often the ones tapped for promotions and leadership roles.

Final Thoughts
You’re at the very beginning of what could become an 80,000-hour career. That’s a long road—but also a meaningful one. Along the way, you’ll build relationships, develop skills, make an impact, and learn more about yourself.
